Invest in Your Vision
To become someone you have never been before, you must see something you have never seen before. - Olubunmi Nmerenu
I grew up on the mainland in Lagos State, in a neighbourhood some will argue is not part of Lagos.
I am talking about the beautiful Ikotun, Egbe.
My school, church, friends, and everything about my life revolved around this location. This was the limit of my exposure. My eyes couldn't see any further.
Until I went to Covenant University...
Although, my university was also situated in what people would call a "local" town - Ota, one visionary man had managed to build a world-class university and the headquarters of one of the largest churches in the world within it.
This man - Bishop David Oyedepo, built a mega city within a "local" town, which placed it on the map, with many kings and dignitaries flowing to it.
I was privileged to have attended Covenant University because it gave me something - the permission and the audacity to dream BIG. I could now see beyond Ikotun, Egbe and the mainland, and it was only a matter of time before what I was seeing caught up with me.
According to Bishop Oyedepo, one of the secrets of Covenant University is that it was modelled after other world-class universities. He situated himself within the context of his vision and was able to see beyond what his environment could provide.
Today, I encourage you to go on a quest to see something you have never seen before. The principle remains "as far as your eyes can see".
Do not let your local context undermine your global relevance.
And local doesn't necessarily mean a small town that isn't traceable on the map, you could be living in the most developed city and still be so ignorant about the world outside your cocoon.
Invest in new experiences and do it consciously. I find it helpful to ask myself: What are you seeing? At first, you may mention things only your outer eyes can see e.g. flowers, cars, the ambience.
However, if you probe a bit further by asking "What else?", you will hit a point where you start to see deeper. e.g. the organised excellence, you could catch a new vision, something that seemed unattainable now feels within your reach.
